Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area sits 20 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip — a world of 3,000-foot sandstone cliffs, desert washes, and wildlife that most visitors to Las Vegas never see. The 13-mile scenic drive and dozens of hiking trails are accessible year-round, with morning timing essential in summer.

Getting There

Drive west on Charleston Boulevard (W Charleston Blvd) from the Strip for approximately 20 minutes. The park entrance is on the left. $15/vehicle entrance fee (America the Beautiful annual pass accepted). No Uber/Lyft service inside the park — you need a rental car or driving service.

The Scenic Drive

The 13-mile one-way loop drive is open from 6am, with timed entry tickets required in spring. In summer, the first 90 minutes before 9am are uncrowded and in manageable temperature. The drive takes 2 hours leisurely with the main overlook stops.

Best Hikes

  • Calico Hills — 1.5-mile loop, no serious elevation gain. The most photographed area. Excellent in any season morning.
  • Keystone Thrust — 1.8 miles, geological wonder where ancient ocean floor meets younger red sandstone.
  • Ice Box Canyon — 2.5 miles, shaded canyon walls that stay cool even in summer. One of the few hikes possible in June/July.
  • Turtlehead Peak — 5 miles, serious elevation gain, spectacular panoramic views. Morning only in summer.
