Slot machines are the largest revenue source for Las Vegas casinos, generating 65–70% of gambling revenue. They're also surrounded by more myths and misconceptions than any other casino game. Here's what the mathematics actually says.

The Myths

  • MYTH: A machine that hasn't paid out in a while is 'due' — False. Each spin is independent. Past results don't affect future outcomes.
  • MYTH: Higher denomination machines pay better — Partially true. Dollar machines typically have higher return-to-player percentages than penny machines, but you also bet more per spin.
  • MYTH: Slots near the door are looser to attract players — Las Vegas casinos use sophisticated floor management; placement logic has evolved beyond this.
  • MYTH: Casinos tighten machines on weekends — Illegal and impractical; Nevada gaming regulations require documented machine configuration changes.

The Reality

  • All licensed Nevada slot machines must pay back at minimum 75% (in practice, Strip machines average 90–93%)
  • Downtown machines average 93–96% return — genuinely better than Strip
  • Video poker with proper strategy returns 99%+ on 9/6 Jacks or Better machines
  • Progressive jackpot machines have lower base return to fund the jackpot
