Practical Casino Tips for Gamblers: Managing Your Bankroll in Las Vegas

The difference between a fun gambling trip and a devastating one is almost entirely money management. Here's the practical guide to gambling responsibly and intelligently.

More Las Vegas trips are derailed by poor gambling money management than by any other factor. The mechanics of bankroll management are simple — the execution, in a casino environment specifically designed to override rational decision-making, is the challenge.

The Fundamental Rule

Set your total gambling budget for the trip before you arrive. Divide it by the number of casino sessions you plan. Each session gets one portion. When that portion is gone, the session is over. Never touch funds designated for hotel, food, or travel.

Session Bankroll by Game

  • Slots: Bring 100–200 credits for your chosen denomination. At $0.25/spin, that's $25–50.
  • Blackjack: Bring 20 times the table minimum. At a $15 table, that's $300.
  • Craps: Bring 50 times the pass line minimum. At a $10 table, that's $500.
  • Poker: Buy in for 100 big blinds. At $1/2 NL, that's $200.

The Win Goal

Set a win goal. If you double your session bankroll, pocket half and continue with the original amount. If you triple it, pocket two-thirds. This structures your winnings as bankable gains rather than 'house money' to be recycled.

Confirm current hours, prices, access, age rules, and availability with the official venue before you go.
